1950 ~ WILLIS ~ 2016
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Garry Willis, with his wife, Hazel, and sister, Debbie at his side, on Wednesday January 27th, 2016, after an undeniable “woe is NOT me” and “it is what it is” attitude, Garry succumbed to his battle with Glioblastoma.
Garry is survived by loving wife and friend of 37 years, Hazel; his fur son, Harley; his sister, Debbie (Gerry) Nyen and family, Taylor, Jenna, Brad, Justine (Kevin), and Chris; sister-in-law, Ann (Bill) Ferguson and family, Trevor (Katrina), Nicole (Doug), and Landon (Monica); brother-in-law, Harry (Belinda) Glass and family, Christopher and Ryan (Katie). He is also survived by his aunt, Melanie Flaman; great-nephews and great-nieces, and many cousins.
Garry was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Louise Willis; his in-laws, Dave and Maggie Glass; his godfather, Red Newnham; and niece, Kimberly Glass.
Garry, born in Medicine Hat on January 25th, 1950 and spent almost all of his life in Redcliff. After working at several different jobs, from Dominion Glass to electrical work, he landed in the Oil and Gas industry which included working at Merland and building the Red Gas plant in Redcliff. After the shut-down of Domglas, Garry ventured out on his own as a consultant with Petro Canada and then Suncor, Resden, and finally CNRL until his retirement in 2014. He joined the Redcliff Volunteer Fire Department in 1980 and served with pride for 25 years. The Redcliff Legion was Garry’s go-to place – you could always find him there in a circle of friends. At the Legion, he was a member of the Executive and held the position of First Vice. Although Garry never wanted to be the center of attention, his antics and sense of humour put him there more often than not.
Garry and Hazel were married September 21st, 1979 and have lived in Redcliff for their entire marriage. In 2005 they moved into their dream home they built overlooking the coulees and South Saskatchewan River. They were true soul mates and each other’s rock. Their love of travel, golf, family, and friends made for many years of love and laughter together.
Garry and his sister, Debbie, had a very special bond that went well beyond a sibling relationship. They were each other’s pillar of strength, supported each other no matter what, and loved each other unconditionally.
Garry, Hazel, and family have felt, and continue to feel the circle of love from everyone. They wish to express their gratitude to the many people who supported them over the years, especially this past year. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Kelly, Dr. Nordal, their staff, the nurses, and radiation technicians of the Foothills Hospital. Thank you to the Oncology nurses and staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Center for all you do. Thank you Dr. J. Esaw – we can only hope that anyone that has to endure a journey like Garry’s, takes it with you. Also, thank you to the Foothills Patient Hostel, the numerous doctors, nurses, technicians, and staff of the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital ER and 4 West, and finally, St. Joseph’s Home.
At Garry’s request, no formal funeral services will be held. Donations in honour of Garry will be gratefully accepted by the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29th Street NW, Calgary, Alberta, T2N 4N2 or to the Redcliff Legion Branch #6, 302 Broadway Ave W, Redcliff, AB T0J 2P0 or to the Carmel Hospice (St. Joseph’s Home), 156 – 3rd Street NE, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 5M1. ELVA "NORINE" (SAUBAK) CARLSON
May 20 , 1934 – January 22, 2016
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, mother-in-law, gramma and great gramma (GG). She passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Ponoka Hospital, Ponoka, Alberta. She was born in Taber, Alberta to Lester and Sarah (Sadie) Day. Her childhood years were spent on the farm south of Fincastle, Alberta with eight other siblings. Her father passed away when she was only two years old. After his death, the family moved to Taber where she received all of her education to Grade 10 and then she went to work at the Post Office. After her corresponding by letter for quite some time with Earl Saubak, they married on February 2, 1953. After their marriage, they moved to Devon, Alberta where they first son, Jim, was born. Shortly thereafter they moved back to Taber. While living in Taber; Ron, Gerry and Karen were born. Then a job came along in the Oil industry which moved the family to Tilley in 1962. Our first home there was a run down farm house, affectionately known as the “Ponderosa”. In 1963, we moved into the town of Tilley and that was the beginning of being settled for many years. In 1964, Cheryl was born to complete the family. Mom returned to work for Canada Post at the Tilley Post Office where she was Post Mistress for 25 years. Mom and Dad were divorced in 1995, and she moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta. That same year, Mom became very ill and experienced liver failure. In December of 1995, she received a liver transplant at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. That gave us 20 more years to spend with her. In 1998, Mom met her second husband, Tory Carlson. They were married October 10, 1998 and spent their time happily in Medicine Hat until his death in June of 2007. Dad passed away previously that year, on January 1, 2007 in Brooks, Alberta. Mom then moved to Red Deer to be closer to her family. Then in 2009, her health started to decline so we moved her to Sunrise Village in Ponoka, Alberta. Gerry and Gwen saw to it that her every need was met. She lived there until her death. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, dancing, her children, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by five children, Jim (Cindy), Ron (Hui), Gerry (Gwen), Karen, and Cheryl (Darrell Hein) ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and all her siblings: Ivan Day, Albert (Bud) Day, Verna Brown, Floy Hyde, Lenor Edwards, Donna Carlsen, Phyllis Day, James (Jay) Day, her first husband Earl, and her second husband, Tory. She was laid to rest at the Prairie View Cemetery in Medicine Hat, on January 29, 2016 with immediate family present. The ceremony was officiated by Bishop Schow from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A Celebration of Life will be held in Ponoka on May 20, 2016. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation, Calgary/Southern Alberta Chapter, Suite 309, 1010 – 1 Ave. NE, Calgary, AB T2E 7W7 or to The Kidney Foundation of Canada, 6007 1A St SW, Calgary, AB T2H 0G5.
