Big final innings gave the Medicine Hat Mavericks and Regina Red Sox a win each during their Sunday doubleheader at Athletic Park. Following a rainout Saturday the teams played two seven-inning contests on Father’s Day, the first a 5-4 walk-off win for the hosts and the second a 9-3 win for the visitors. Down 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh of the first game, the Mavs rallied with two outs and won when Michael Olson singled home Konner Lutz and Bryan Arthur. Myles Richards got the win in relief despite giving up two runs in the top of the seventh. Olson went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI. Medicine Hat began the second game on fire, rapping four straight hits and scoring three first-inning runs off Red Sox starter Justin Blue. But Blue didn’t allow a hit and only one baserunner thereafter, going the distance. His offence provided five insurance runs in the seventh off Bryce Feia and Matthew Smith. Now 8-4, the Mavs remain first in the Western Major Baseball League’s West Division, a half-game up on Lethbridge. Regina leads the East at 7-4. Medicine Hat is at Okotoks Tuesday, Lethbridge Wednesday and Okotoks again Friday before returning to host Saskatoon next Saturday and Sunday. 7
