Two incredible three-set thrillers culminated in a provincial title Saturday night for Eagle Butte High School’s girls volleyball team.
The Talons went undefeated in Edmonton in the 3A girls draw, earning a bye into the semifinals where they beat Ardrossan 2-1 (26-24, 15-25, 15-13). In the final they met up with the St. Albert Catholic Skyhawks, the same school that’s given Monsignor McCoy’s girls basketball team fits by winning the last few provincial titles in that sport at the Colts’ expense.
Eagle Butte won the first set 25-22, lost the second set 25-15 and then claimed the third and deciding set 20-18 in one of the longest final sets in a provincial final ever.
All eight Alberta Schools Athletic Association champions were crowned Saturday in Edmonton, part of a celebration of the sport’s 50th anniversary with the ASAA.
For Dunmore’s Talons, it marked an improvement over last year’s bronze medal and subsequent most sportsmanlike award. They cruised through local league play with an undefeated record and captured numerous tournament titles as well.
