GDANSK, Poland – Montreal’s Pascal Dion claimed the gold medal in the men’s 1,500-metre race at a World Cup short-track speedskating event Saturday. Dion’s effort highlighted a strong performance by Canada, which also earned a silver and two bronze medals. Dion earned his first individual World Cup win of the season in two minutes 16.060 seconds. He finished ahead of Korean Jang Sungwoo (2:16.087) and Friso Emons of the Netherlands (2:16.178). Steven Dubois of Terrebonne, Que., was second in the 500-metre race in 41.467 seconds, finishing behind Seo Yi Ra of Korea (41.451). Jordan Pierre-Gilles of Sherbrooke, Que., was seventh overall, two spots ahead of Felix Roussel, also of Sherbrooke. Kim Boutin of Sherbrooke was third in the women’s 500-metre race to earn her first individual medal of the World Cup season. She had a final time of 43.190 seconds to finish behind Selma Poutsma of the Netherlands (43.033) and Hanne Desmet of Belgium (43.046). And finally, Canada took third in the mixed relay with a time of two minutes 41.469 seconds. The Netherlands took first (2:40.74) ahead of Korea (2:41.35).
