MONTREAL – The Montreal Alouettes signed first-round pick and six-foot-five, 271-pound defensive lineman Lwal Uguak on Wednesday.
Uguak, selected seventh overall in this year’s draft, took part in rookie camps with the NFL’s New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons before signing with the Alouettes.
The 23-year-old from Edmonton had nine tackles and one recovered fumble playing for Texas Christian University last season, helping the Horned Frogs to a 13-2 record and an appearance in the College Football Playoff championship game.
Linebacker Jonathan Sutherland, the Alouettes’ other first-round pick this year at fifth overall, is still trying out for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.
Montreal also announced it was releasing 11 players from training camp: Akial Byers (DL), Ronnie Blackmon (WR), Trevon Bradford (WR), Jalen Burks (OL), Hasise Dubois (WR), Coney Durr (DB), Rashaad Harding (LB), Jaylan Alexander (LB), Demetris Robertson (WR), Donald Stewart (WR), C.J. Wright (DL).
The Alouettes had the day off on Wednesday, with training camp in Trois-Rivières, Que., resuming on Thursday.
