South Korea’s Kim takes 500 metres in World Cup speedskating, Canada’s Dubreuil third

CALGARY – South Korea’s Kim Jun-Ho won his first men’s 500 metres of the season in World Cup speedskating and Canada’s Laurent Dubreuil was third Saturday.

Kim posted a winning time of 34.07 seconds in Calgary’s Olympic Oval ahead of Jordan Stolz of the United States in second in 34.08. The 18-year-old American broke his own world junior record of 34.11.

Dubreuil, from LĂ©vis, Que., crossed the line in 34.10. The Canadian continued to top the season’s World Cup standings in the 500.

Canada’s Ivanie Blondin, Brooklyn McDougall and Carolina Hiller finished second to the United States in the women’s team sprint and ahead of the Netherlands in third.

Japan’s Miho Takagi won a second straight women’s 1,500 metres for her third victory in four races this sason. Davide Ghiotto of Italy was first in the men’s 10,000 metres.

Calgary’s second World Cup in as many weeks concludes Sunday with the men’s and women’s 1,000 metres and mass starts.
