Rattler roundup: Rattlers men’s soccer sweeps weekend

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers’ men’s soccer team picked up a pair of wins over the weekend.

The Rattlers won both of their games, beating the SAIT Trojans 2-1 Saturday at home before topping the Lethbridge Kodiaks 4-2 Sunday on the road.

Tata Mugisha and Joao Cintra scored for the Rattlers against the Trojans, Stefan Vrska made three saves. Against Lethbridge, Mugisha had a trio of goals and Cintra tallied a goal and an assist. Vrska made four saves.

The Rattlers’ women’s team dropped both of their games, falling 2-0 to SAIT on Saturday and 4-1 to Lethbridge on Sunday.

Rylan Morhart made 21 saves in the loss Saturday, adding five more saves on Sunday. Kiana Dumais scored for the Rattlers against Lethbridge.

The Rattlers mens’ (2-1-2) and women’s (2-4-1) soccer teams host the Ambrose Lions on Oct. 5.

Golf

For the second year in a row, Rattlers’ golfer Michael Valk has been named the ACAC male golfer of the year.

Valk won his second-straight ACAC championship after winning both regional tournaments heading into the championship round Sept. 23.

Valk, as well as MHC’s men’s team and two members of MHC’s women’s team are off to the CCAA national championships Oct. 15-18 in Etobicoke, Ont.

Cross Country

The Rattlers’ cross country women’s team raced to a fourth place finish Saturday.

MHC’s women’s team, led by captain Maddie Scrimger’s second place finish, came in the top five of the ACAC 4 St. Mary’s Open in Calgary.

Scrimger and teammates Ellie Barlow (10th), Mizuki Iwata (23rd), Hannah Ulm (31st), Aki Iwata (36th), Addy Weir (38th) and Annika Marshall (50th) completed a hilly 6km course on the St. Mary’s campus, competing against 10 other ACAC schools.

The Rattlers’ men’s team had only four of their seven runners available for the 8km race. Spencer Wilson (27th), Gage Smith (36th), Elijah Lavoie-Pierzchala (38th) and Griffin Goodfellow (49th) completed the race with a team finish of 10th.

Next up for the Rattlers Runners is the Augustana Campus Open on Oct. 12 in Camrose.
