The Medicine Hat Mavericks bounced back in a big way Sunday. After a 4-0 shut-out loss Saturday to Regina, Medicine Hat answered back with a 10-4 win Sunday over the Red Sox. The win gives the Mavs a third victory through the first four contests of their five-game road trip. The two teams traded runs in the second inning, with the Mavs opening the scoring with an RBI double from catcher Nick Thibodeau. He was in the starting lineup for the first time since June 29 after getting hit on a back swing by an Okotoks Dawgs’ hitter. Regina answered back in the bottom of the second, with a lead-off solo home run to tie the game up at 1-1. They were held scoreless until the ninth inning while Medicine Hat scored nine unanswered runs en route to the win. The Mavs scored three runs in the third inning, started by an RBI double from centre fielder Brody Gardner. Designated hitter Jordan Phillips smacked a ball to deep centre field for a triple to score Gardner and Phillips himself scored on a sacrifice infield hit from third baseman Tyler Vanneste for the 4-1 Mavs lead. Medicine Hat scored two runs in three straight innings, leading 10-1 after the seven frames. Vanneste plated a run in the fifth on a deep double to right field and right fielder Brady Bean scored another with a sacrifice fly. Their pair of runs in the sixth came off an RBI single from second baseman Marshall Burke and an infield hit from Gardner who beat-out a double play for an 8-1 lead. Medicine Hat hit double digits on a two-run home run from first baseman Landon Mokris in the seventh inning. His first long ball of the season put the Mavs ahead 10-1. While the Mavs offence flexed its muscles, starter Dylan Runge held the Red Sox at bay. Besides the solo home run in the second inning, Runge held Regina to a total of three hits, two walks with three recorded strikeouts. Leo Woods took over on the mound and worked the remaining three innings of the game. Regina made a comeback bid in the ninth inning, scoring three runs on three hits, but the Mavs held on to record the 10-4 win. Woods finished his afternoon with the three runs allowed on four hits and two walks. Medicine Hat outhit the Red Sox 13-7. The Mavs (19-14) finish up their five-game Saskatchewan road trip on Monday, facing the Weyburn Beavers. They return to Athletic Park on Tuesday, hosting the Swift Current 57’s. 14
