The Medicine Hat Mavericks battled the elements for a dub Monday.
The Mavs weathered a rainy Canada Day to come out on top, beating the Weyburn Beavers 16-10 at Athletic Park.
Head coach Kevin Mitchell liked his team’s offence and their ability to keep them ahead in the contest.
“We swung it really well, it’s nice to still come out on the right side of things, even when we have an inning like the fifth,” Mitchell said. “Those innings have taken us out of games, but we swung it so well early that it allowed us to keep our foot on the gas late in the game and be in a position to win.
“Every wins a good win. It was sloppy and mucky out there but the boys stayed locked in enough to get the job done.”
The Mavs came into the contest off a comeback win Sunday, beating the Edmonton Prospects 12-10.
Weyburn opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI single and a wild pitch.
The Mavs answered back quickly, putting up four runs in the bottom of the frame for the lead.
Brady Bean tied the game up single-handedly with a two-run double and scored on a Michael Quick double. Micah Dvorak rounded out the frame with an RBI double for the 4-2 lead.
They added to the lead with an explosive seven-run second inning for a 11-2 lead.
Jordan Phillips kicked things off with an RBI single and scored on a three-run home run from Tyler Vanneste. They scored two runs on a bases-loaded, infield hit groundout from Jaden Babiuk that scored one run and plated another after a Weyburn error.
Marshall Burke rounded out the frame with an RBI single.
Weyburn came alive again in the fifth inning, scoring six runs to make it an 11-8 game.
Braeden Davis started the game and was lifted in the fifth inning with the bases loaded. His line finished with five runs allowed on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched. Ryan Dexter took over in the fifth and worked three outs into the sixth, getting lifted for Wyatt Thompson.
Dexter allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits with two walks and a punch-out. Thompson held the Beavers at bay over the last 3.2 innings, allowing a lone run on three hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
The Mavs answered back in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on a two-run double from Quick and an RBI single from Johnny Vulcano for a 14-8 lead.
Weyburn tallied a run in the sixth and the Mavs added two more to their tally in the eighth with Brady Bean plating two runs with a triple.
The Beavers scored in the top of the ninth but the Mavs held on for the 16-10 win. Medicine Hat outhit the Beavers 19-12.
The Mavs (16-12) host the Sylvan Lake Gulls on Tuesday before an off-day Wednesday.
