By James Tubb on June 28, 2023.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks flexed their offensive muscles Wednesday night.

The Mavericks poured on 11 runs at Weyburn against the Beavers, winning 11-3. Medicine Hat entered the contest off a split doubleheader Tuesday at Regina against the Red Sox, dropping the first game 4-2 before winning the second contest 2-1.

The Mavericks opened the scoring Wednesday with a first inning RBI double from right fielder Max Valdez. After a scoreless second frame, Medicine Hat bumped up their lead with a four-run third inning for a 5-0 lead.

Catcher Dominic VanDoorne knocked in a two-RBI double before scoring on a RBI double from second baseman Brady Bean. First baseman Andrew Savage drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field to round out the innings offence. Neither team scored in the next three innings until the Mavericks doubled their lead in the seventh.

Shortstop Tyler Vanneste drove in two runs with a two-RBI single to right field to start off the inning. Savage notched his second sacrifice fly, this time driving in the run with a fly ball to left field. Medicine Hat’s last two runs of the frame came off an error on a ball put in play from centre fielder Brody Gardner. The Mavericks capped off their offence with a run in the top of the ninth inning on a Gardner sacrifice knock with the bases loaded.

Adam Golby started Wednesday’s game on the mound for Medicine Hat and worked an efficient five innings. He struck out six batters while only allowing three hits and a walk on 65 pitched through five innings. He was hit with a comebacker in the fifth before the inning ended.

Dylan Esquival took over to start the sixth inning and recorded two strikeouts in his clean inning of work. Nicholas Spidel started the seventh inning and worked two frames, striking out three while allowing two hits. Medicine Hat product Jack Suhai took the mound in the ninth inning and allowed three runs on three hits with a walk before closing out the game, holding the Mavs 11-3 final lead for the win.

The Mavericks (14-14) wrap up their 10 game in nine day stretch Thursday with a rematch against the Beavers.
