The Medicine Hat Mavericks ended their double header Tuesday on a high note. After dropping Game One 4-2 of the double header at Regina, the Mavericks beat the Red Sox 2-1 in Game 2. Shortstop Tyler Vanneste led the Mavericks offence in Game One, notching a RBI on a hit. Medicine Hat scored twice in the first inning, as third baseman Nathan Tarver drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Vamneste drove in another with a sacrifice play of his own. Tim Carlson started the game for Medicine Hat and pitched into the sixth inning. He was lifted in the sixth after allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five batters. Dylan Weaver took the ball and registered two strikeouts in his inning of work. Game Two was a pitchers duel as both teams were held off the board for the first three frames of the seven-inning contest. Regina struck first with a run in the bottom of the fourth on starter Garrett Nicholson. The Mavericks answered back in the top of the fifth on a RBI single from first baseman Max Valdez, tying the game up at 1-1. Nicholson started the game for Medicine Hat and worked into the sixth inning. After giving up a lead off single, Nicholson was lifted with a stat line of one run allowed on two hits and three walks against with five strikeouts. Weaver made his way into his second game of the day, working the final two innings with two walks against and three strikeouts. The Mavericks grabbed the lead in the top of the seventh inning on a RBI double from left fielder Ryan Dousett. Weaver held Regina at bay for the Mavericks 2-1 win. Tuesday’s win marks Kevin Mitchell’s first as head coach of the Mavericks since taking over the club from Mark Goodman, who left Tuesday morning for a professional pitching coach job in the Pioneer League. The Mavericks (13-14) are back in action Wednesday at Weyburn for a two-game set against the Beavers. Those two games wrap up Medicine Hat’s stretch of 10 games in nine days. 13
