jtubb@medicinehatnews.com@ReporterTubb The McCoy Colts JV baseball team has a big weekend ahead to cap off the season. The JV club is in Okotoks competing in the Southern Alberta High School League Provincial Tier 1 league championships. They are the lone JV club of the six competing in the tier 1 provincials. Head coach Chad Frey says it’s a good opportunity for the team to grow. “This is one of the youngest teams we’ve ever fielded out of McCoy,” Frey said. “We have seven Grade 8s, two Grade 9s, with two (Grade) 10s and one 11. So we’re dynamic in the way that we’re young and also have some great veteran leadership. They basically are ready to go take it to the varsity clubs and compete while putting out the best product of baseball they can.” The JV Colts finished the regular season action with a 7-1 record, tied for first place in the East with the Notre Dame Hounds. Frey says they were a little surprised with their record in the season but says the kids work ethic made it possible. “We knew it was going to be a challenging venture this year but we had a bunch of pieces in place where we knew that the kids were ready to learn, they were willing to work hard hustle and demonstrate their overall enthusiasm for the game,” Frey said. “Anytime you can get that sort of a combination, we knew we were going to be able to hang around and compete and play a good brand of baseball.” They open their provincials action facing off against Foothills Composite High at 11 a.m. today. Their second round-robin match is also today, a 6 p.m. start against Holy Trinity Academy varsity. Frey says they’ll have to keep playing McCoy baseball if they want to be playing for the championship Saturday at 2 p.m. “We’ve worked really hard at all aspects of the game, we know we’re going to have to throw strikes, we’re going to have to play solid defence and make the routine plays,” Frey said. “We’re going to have to continue to be aggressive swinging the bat and on the bases. That’s really been a positive and huge attribute for our club is how we have played the small ball game. We’re not afraid to run, we looked for extra chances to take the extra bags when they’re given. “We’re going to try to put that pressure on teams as much as we can and in a short provincials like it is things happen really fast.” 11
