The Medicine Hat Hounds Black U13 AA hockey team dug out of an early deficit and rallied to a 7-3 victory over their Gas City rival Hounds Orange on Tuesday night at Co-op Place.

Captain Ty Hynes scored twice and added an assist to pave the way to the victory and give Black a 3-0 edge in their five-game series against Orange to open the South Central Alberta Hockey League season.

Theron Bensler kicked off the scoring for Orange with a shorthanded goal midway through the first, but Black pushed back with tallies from Ty Wasyluk and Liam Green to take a lead into the second.

Black then exploded for five goals in the middle frame, two from Hynes and individuals out of Ethan Hall, Illya Khazov and Carter Allan.

Bensler added his second of the game late in the period, then Orange captain Brennan Finke potted another in the third, but they were unable to mount a comeback.

Black’s Kayden Van Ham stopped 25 shots in the victory, while Orange’s Mac Harvey-Zenk turned away 26 in the loss.

Black took the first two games of the five-game set, 6-5 on Friday and 6-3 on Sunday.

The local rivals meet up at the Family Leisure Centre for Game 4 of the stretch on Friday at 6:30 p.m. They’ll close out the series with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday at Co-op Place.

Black will then move into a five-game set against the Taber Golden Suns (0-0-0), while Orange will meet up with the Lethbridge Hurricanes Red (0-1-1).
