Rivalry game on tap as Cubs host Coaldale

By Medicine Hat News on January 31, 2020.

The race for second place in the Heritage Junior Hockey will be on full display tonight at the Kinplex.

The Medicine Hat Cubs welcome the Coaldale Copperheads to town for what will be the biggest game of the season so far for both teams in action.

While the Cubs trail Coaldale 2-1 in the season series, they hold a one-point edge on the Copperheads for third in the HJHL’s Southern Division while sitting two points behind the Cochrane Generals for the coveted second-place spot – which comes with a bye through the first round of the playoffs.

The Cubs also have two games in hand on the Copperheads and just four left in the regular season, meaning a regulation win tonight will narrow the three-horse race to a two-team sprint for second.

After hosting the struggling Lomond Lakers in a Sunday matinee, the Cubs will close out the regular season with a home-and-home set against the Generals – a two-game battle that could very well determine who will be forced to play in the first round.

The Cups and Copperheads drop the puck tonight at 7:30 p.m.
