Vikings girls win for sportsmanship

By Medicine Hat News on December 13, 2019.

They came up short against the eventual provincial champions, but Crescent Heights High School’s girls volleyball team made an impression on those around them at their last tournament of the year.

Coach Scott Galloway was informed this week that his Vikings won the 3A sportsmanship banner for how they conducted themselves at the finals in St. Paul.

“They had a very short bench, suffered some injuries throughout the tournament but always were positive, hustled and played with heart,” read a statement Galloway received from the host committee. “Scott demonstrated very positive coaching strategies to motivate his team. This team demonstrated amazing defence and had a never quit attitude! After watching this team win or lose, they held their heads up and looked their opponents in the eye to congratulate them with a well-played match.”

The statement concluded by noting Crescent Heights received three more votes than any other team for the banner.

It’s the second year in a row the Vikings girls have won the sportsmanship award. Last year they were in Beaverlodge and finished out of the playoffs. This year they fell to Springbank in the quarter-final round. Springbank won gold later that day.
