The Jasper Homes Hounds are doing more than just playing hockey on Sunday. The midget AA team is also stepping up in the fight against cancer. Medicine Hat will hold a cancer awareness charity event alongside its 2 p.m. game against the Wheatland Chiefs, with special pink-themed jerseys auctioned off, a special 50/50 and popcorn balls for sale. All proceeds will be directed to cancer-related charities. Hounds head coach Randy Wong said with one of the players’ parents battling cancer, and most families touched by the disease in one way or another, it’s an important game for the team to be a part of. “I think one family that has to battle cancer has more strength, courage, willpower, and heart than any game of hockey and all its athletes combined,” said Wong via text message Friday. “We battle as hard as we need to and sometimes we take this game for granted. “No win will ever match the success of a cancer fighter. If my players have an ounce of what these women fight for, we would never lose again.” With three straight wins at home this month, they also host Red Deer Saturday at the Kinplex and would love to see the streak at five following Sunday’s action. The Hounds are 7-1-2, trailing only the 9-2-2 Chiefs in the South Central Alberta Hockey League standings. With three games in hand they’re in good position, and their only head-to-head meeting this season ended in a 3-3 tie last month in Strathmore. 9
