Medicine Hat libero Shaya Suchy comes up with a dig against Ambrose University Friday, Oct. 18, 2019 at Medicine Hat College. The Rattlers announced on their social media accounts Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019 that Suchy broke the career digs record in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference over the weekend.

Almost a year to the day she became Medicine Hat College’s all-time digs leader, women’s volleyball player Shaya Suchy rose to the top of her conference’s record books.

The Rattlers announced on their social media accounts Saturday night that the fifth-year libero had passed Brooke Peterson – whose career at Briercrest ended in 2014 – for the career record in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.

Peterson finished with 1,244 digs, while Suchy now has 1,250 after adding 27 in a 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-19, 25-19) win over visiting Lethbridge.

With more than half the season still left to play, the Saskatchewan product is likely to add to the mark. She leads the ACAC this season with 152 digs.

At 4-4 the women’s team is doing exactly what head coach Kim Stonehouse predicted before the season. They started slow but have won four in a row, set to host 4-2 Red Deer Friday and Saturday at the Snake Pit.

On Saturday, Suchy set the tone defensively along with middles Megan Hoeber and Dryden Gris, who had five and four blocks respectively. Fellow fifth-year Amber Stigter had 14 kills and 11 digs. No Lethbridge player broke into double digits in kills.

Men’s volleyball

The men’s volleyball team lost its seventh in a row, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-18) to Lethbridge Saturday.

Aleksa Zivic and KeAndre Evans each had 11 kills. Carter Hansen and Tony Albizzati each had nine for the Kodiaks, who are now 5-1.

Women’s basketball

A month into the ACAC’s women’s basketball regular season, six of the eight teams in the South Division are tied atop the standings with three wins.

Some, like Briercrest, have only played three times. Medicine Hat has played six, winning twice this past weekend.

The Rattlers beat Lethbridge 61-50 Saturday, led by Katelyn Rozdeba’s 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Denajha Kie had 15 for the host Kodiaks, who led early but never led in the second half.

Medicine Hat is at St. Mary’s Friday.

Men’s basketball

Medicine Hat’s men’s basketball team was handed a 94-66 loss in Lethbridge Saturday, now 1-5 on the season. Rookie Fred Kabore’s 10 points off the bench were a highlight, though starting guard Arthur Rosa led with 14 and nine rebounds.

Chase Bohne led all scorers with 26, adding seven steals and seven assists for the Kodiaks.
