For a first time out, the under-12 Medicine Hat Blackout ringette team did pretty well.

Playing their first competitive games of the season, the Hat squad went 2-2 at the Airdrie Ring of Fire Tournament, claiming victories in their first and final matchups of the weekend.

They began with a 7-1 win over Beaumont Rush that included two goals from Ryleigh Jackiw and singles from Leighton Wright, Sarah Laturnas, Autym Heidinger and Ravyn Lehr.

A loss to Fort Saskatchewan saw Sutton Provost earn the team’s heart and hustle award, then they narrowly lost 6-5 to Spruce Grove in a contest that saw Lehr and Jackiw with two goals each and Wright the other.

Finally, a 6-4 win in the fifth-place game saw Lehr score twice and Wright, Jackiw, Margot Kerr and Kensington Provost notch the others. Sadie Berstad got the win in net.

The under-12 team heads to Calgary for league games this weekend.

Under-14

Also in Airdrie for the Ring of Fire, the under-14 Maximum had only 10 players available but made the most of it, pushing hard despite not earning any wins.

They fell 9-3 to Buffalo Plains, 6-3 to the Regina Gators, 6-4 to Airdrie’s Rebels and 10-4 to a different Buffalo Plains team.

That final game came after an injury to Grace Ammann, who had two goals in an earlier game. That meant the Hat side was down to nine skaters – a tall task indeed.

Kasey Martin also had a two-goal game during the weekend.

Under-16

The Matrix under-16 team split a doubleheader with Swift Current’s Blues this past weekend.

After losing the opener 6-3 (despite two goals from Jaelyn Siewert and another from Serina Grona), the Matrix scored early and often in a 7-4 win to finish the day. Reagyn Heinrichs got the win in net while Siewert had another pair of goals, and Grona, Hailey Sanders, Rowenna Schlaht, Novalee Newton and Ryan Sweet also scored.
