The Medicine Hat Cubs earned a pair of road victories this past weekend, doing what they needed to against teams below them in the Heritage Junior B Hockey League standings. At Ponoka Saturday, the Cubs outshot the Stampeders 41-34 but needed third-period goals from Spencer Chapman and Mason Fischer to break a 2-2 tie and win 4-2. Fischer’s second of the night came shorthanded with goalie Dawsen Savage having taken a penalty. Savage came on in relief of Brett Vanderveer to make 19 saves for the win. Chandler Aleman had the other goal for the Cubs. Ponoka is 4-9-1, second-last in the Northern Division. It was a more straightforward route to victory Sunday in Rocky Mountain House, a 6-2 win over the expansion Rams (2-12) which they never trailed. Cooper Hilworth and Brayden Anderson each had a goal and an assist while Fischer, Chandler Aleman, Mackenzie Fritzler and Ethan Machan had the others. Savage made 42 saves. The Cubs, now 9-3-2, visit Red Deer and Stettler this weekend. 8
