A dominant season continued with a South East Zone Volleyball League title Wednesday night for the Hat High Mohawks.
The varsity boys team had no trouble on home court, blasting away both the Brooks Buffalos and Senator Gershaw Gators to claim first place.
After getting a bye to the semifinals, they dominated Brooks in two sets before doing the same in a 2-0 (25-12, 25-8) championship match against Gershaw.
“I’m very happy with the result,” texted Mohawks coach Mike Jerred to the News. “As a team we had expectations for winning our league so following through with the win is very rewarding.
“As a team with seven Grade 12’s we had more experience and horsepower than the injured Gators tonight but they played well.”
After a 5-0 regular season in the local league in which they dropped just two sets, the Mohawks head to zones next week in Lethbridge looking to expand on their winning ways. They’ve been an honourable mention in the provincial rankings since mid-October and would love nothing more than to head to Edmonton in two weeks’ time for the 4A championships.
Gershaw, a 1A school, will host provincials Nov. 21-23 so they don’t have to worry as much about zones – though another banner would sure look nice. After a 4-1 league regular season, they also had a bye into the semifinals Wednesday but were given all they could handle by Crescent Heights. The Vikings forced a third set which Gershaw won 16-14.
Earlier in the night the league all-stars were revealed. To no surprise the Mohawks had three players represented, led by MVP Jaxon Bos, then Tory Nelson on the first team and Ethan Pittman on the second team.
Gershaw’s Blayze Uchikura (first team) and Brendan Smith (second team) were also honoured.
Crescent Heights’ Heyden Harrison (first team) and Landon Scholly (second team), McCoy’s Justin Bacelonia (first team) and Holden Lehr (second team), Eagle Butte’s Aiden Heller (first team) and William Baird (second team) and Brooks’ Kolby MacNaughton (second team) rounded out the all-star teams.
The varsity girls playoffs take place tonight at McCoy.
