McCoy's junior varsity boys volleyball team celebrates a league title Monday, Nov. 4, 2019.

Monsignor McCoy’s Colts finished off an unbeaten season in the South East Zone Volleyball League’s junior boys division, but it wasn’t easy.

The Colts dropped Hat High 2-0 (25-20, 25-19) in Monday’s playoff final on home court, following a 2-1 (22-25, 25-15, 15-13) win over St. Mike’s in the semifinals earlier in the evening.

“It seems like (all) the teams have gotten progressively better in a short span of time,” said Colts coach Rob Burzminski. “I don’t think there was much difference between us, we just came out on top tonight.”

Hat High also came from behind in its semifinal, beating Eagle Butte 2-1 (20-25, 25-13, 15-2).

Burzminski said his Colts went 6-0 in the regular season but noted it was no cakewalk.

The junior girls playoffs go tonight at Eagle Butte, with the host Talons a perfect 5-0 in the regular season and getting a bye into the semifinal round along with 4-1 McCoy. Brooks plays Crescent Heights and Hat High plays St. Mike’s in the quarter-finals to start the night.

Varsity finals go Wednesday and Thursday.
