McCoy boys in hunt for a repeat

By Medicine Hat News on September 24, 2019.

Monsignor McCoy’s boys golf team enters the final day at provincials with the chance to do something spectacular.

After winning the school’s first-ever Alberta Schools Athletic Association banner last year, the Colts’ team including Sam Bratvold, Ryan Hodgins, Owen Burzminski and Jacob Dorton are just two shots off the pace following the first 18 holes at Innisfail Golf and Country Club Monday.

Bratvold had the Colts’ best round of the day, an 8-over par 80 that has him tied for 15th place in the individual standings. Hodgins shot an 84, Burzminski an 86 and Dorton a 92. Hunter Thomson of Calgary’s West Island College shot a 71 for the lead.

Only the top three scores per hole count towards the team event, and McCoy is at 236 on a crowded leaderboard. Red Deer’s Hunting Hills leads the 3A and 4A schools at 234, one shot better than Springbank. St. Paul is also at 236.

No Medicine Hat-area girls are at provincials this week. The boys tournament switches venues for the final round, going to the shorter Alberta Springs Golf Course in Red Deer where the girls played on Monday.
