Weich, Norris win both singles and doubles titles at Open

By Medicine Hat News on August 27, 2019.

Raymond Weich and Kristen Norris defended their tennis titles at the Medicine Hat Open on Sunday, then took their dominance of the court to another level.

Weich won the men’s singles title over Calvin Heller for the second year in a row, scoring a 6-4, 6-0 triumph. He also paired with his dad Craig to win the open’s doubles championship, 6-2 and 6-2 over Sydney Ebio and Brent Meyer.

Norris? She beat Xiaojiang Dai 6-2, 6-0 for the women’s singles victory, defending last year’s win, plus took the doubles title that eluded her in 2018. Norris and mom Linda beat sisters Kassie and Libby Bourassa 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Raymond and Kristen merely hoisted the singles trophies a year ago, so winning doubles as well was quite a feat this time around.

There were lots of other winners at the Medicine Hat Tennis Club’s toughest weekend of the summer, coming as players have had plenty of time for their games to round into form.

In the men’s singles consolation side, Peter O’Driscoll beat Jess Ferris 7-5 and 6-2. David Schnare won the men’s intermediate title 4-6, 7-5 and 6-2 over Mike Dykstra, while Ron Fisher bested Lydell Wenzel 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in that event’s consolation match.

In men’s doubles consolation, the team of Riley Danroth and Doug Thomas got by Ryusuke Harada and Jason Petrick 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.

The women’s singles consolation match saw Dawn Olson emerge with a win after Brooke Pfeifer retired down 5-0 in the first set. In the women’s doubles consolation, Emilee Jackson teamed up with Rocheal Howes to beat Sheila Reinheller and Roberta Wenzel 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.

There’s only one more multi-day tournament left on the local schedule, that being the mixed doubles portion of the Open Sept. 6 and 7.
