Dawgs win WCBL title

By Medicine Hat News on August 17, 2019.

The Okotoks Dawgs are Western Canadian Baseball League champions for the first time in 10 years.

The Dawgs rallied to steal an 8-6 victory from the Regina Red Sox in Game 2 of the WCBL final Friday at Seaman Stadium thanks to a four-run eighth inning.

Ricardo Sanchez started up the rally with a game-tying RBI single after Sox pitcher Jackson Cofer gave the Dawgs some life with an error earlier in the frame. Davis Todosichuk then took over the lead with an RBI bunt single before Gavin Logan added some crucial insurance with a 2-RBI double.

The Red Sox pushed back with an RBI single from Erik Crossman in the ninth before putting the tying run on base, but Dawgs closer Brandon Desjardins slammed the door shut to secure both the save and the championship.

Dan Ferrario collected the win after sending the Red Sox down in order in the eighth.

Cofer settled for the season-ending loss after allowing five runs – two earned – on eight hits over 2 2/3 innings.

The victory marks Okotoks’ fifth WCBL title. The Dawgs were last awarded the league championship in 2009 when the Melville Millionaires were penalized for using an illegal player after rainouts forced the teams to call the series a draw.
