Watson on to Pan Am Games hurdles final

By Medicine Hat News on August 7, 2019.

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Paul Chiasson - Sage Watson, seen July 28 in Montreal winning nationals, will be in the 400 metre hurdles final in Lima, Peru Thursday.

Sage Watson is going to run for a medal at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

The professional track athlete from Seven Persons finished second in her 400 metre hurdles semifinal Tuesday, leading from an outside lane for most of the run but pushed hard to the finish line; only the top three were guaranteed a spot in Thursday’s final.

Puerto Rico’s Grace Claxton won in 56.30 seconds, while Watson, whose season still has the IAAF World Championships yet to come, clocked in at 56.37 seconds.

The heat proved the faster of the two on the day, with five of its seven finishers winding up qualifying for the final.

Of those in the final, Watson has the third-best world ranking. Jamaica’s Rushell Clayton (ninth) and Barbados’ Tia-Adana Belle (12th) are above Watson’s No. 14 ranking.

The Canadian champion has a season’s best of 55.32 seconds.
