Mickey picked for Parapan Am team

By Medicine Hat News on July 27, 2019.

She’s ranked fourth in the world in her track and field event, lists her home town as Medicine Hat and may well become a Canadian champion this weekend.

Sarah Mickey may not be the first name you think of when it comes to Hatters in the sport, but she’s making waves in para seated discus.

On Friday, Mickey, 21, was named to Canada’s 26-person team headed to Lima, Peru next month for the Parapan Am Games. But first she’s set to compete Saturday in Montreal at almost the exact same time as Seven Persons’ Sage Watson will run her 400 metre hurdles preliminary heat.

Watson is expected to be in Sunday’s final. Mickey – who threw 21.30 metres in Lethbridge earlier this year – is fourth in the world in her F55 classification.

Mickey holds Canadian records in discus, javelin and shot put for F55, one of dozens of para-sport designations. The former figure skater who attributed Lyme disease to a sudden paralysis started out trying sledge hockey, then moved in to athletics full-time a couple years ago.
