Mavs blow the doors off in Brooks

By Medicine Hat News on July 13, 2019.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks clawed back to within one win of the .500 mark following a landslide 14-0 victory over the struggling Brooks Bombers on Friday night at Elks Stadium.

The Mavericks took a comfortable 6-0 lead into the seventh before unloading on Bombers relievers Matt Scott and Felix Pena in an eight-run inning.

Austin Sojka started off the seventh-inning rally with a two-run homer, then Colton Wright blew the doors off with a grand slam just four batters later.

Pena took over for Scott after he walked the next two batters, but ended up walking in a run himself.

Tito Jones got Medicine Hat on the board in the second when he followed up Cameron Pope’s double with one of his own, then Freddy Walker brought around two more on an RBI error – giving the Mavs the first and only lead of the night.

Collin Klingensmith brought in two more on an RBI single in the fourth before coming around to score.

Mavericks starter Owen Steele left with the victory after keeping the Bombers off the board while limiting them to three runs and three walks with three strikeouts through five complete innings of work.

Medicine Hat product Nathan Stark entered in the sixth and held Brooks to one hit and two walks over the next two runs, then Zach McDermott entered to keep the Bombers out of the hit column for the final two frames.

Bombers starter Nick Garcia took the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits and a walk over the first five innings.

The Mavericks (17-18) and Bombers (10-25) go back at it Saturday at Athletic Park for Christmas in July Night – in support of the Santa Claus Fund – before both teams head back to Brooks to close out the three-game set Sunday.
