After playing two seven-inning games Monday, the Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs and Billings Scarlets started the finale of a three-game set early enough Tuesday that the visitors could drive home at a decent hour.

Instead, they played more innings in one game than they had in the previous two combined.

The Scarlets prevailed 17-12 in 16 innings at Jeffries Field, forcing extra innings with a run in the seventh and seeing the Monarchs come up with matching runs in both the 12th and 14th before finally ending it with a five-run rally.

Three hits, three walks and an error combined to give Billings the decisive runs.

Andy Larsen went 4-for-9 including the game-tying single in the seventh. Jarron Wilcox 4-for-8, and Aaron Seward threw the last four innings for the Scarlets, including a 1-2-3 16th.

Heyden Harrison went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI for Medicine Hat, which also got a 3-for-8 game from Reese Whelen. Brandon Hauck took the loss despite an impressive 8 1/3 innings of relief.

The Monarchs had a chance to win in the 14th when Whelen hit a single with men on second and third. The first run came in to tie the game but Jaden Schwindt was called out at home.

Harrison doubled and scored in the 12th to keep the game going after a balk call on Hauck had Billings in the lead.
