Barabe, Shilka book spots to major meet

A pair of Medicine Hat swimmers won gold at long course swim provincials this past weekend in Calgary.

Jaivyn Barabe of the Waves touched the wall first in the girls 13-under 50 metre breaststroke, while Marlins 15-year-old Trinity Shilka won the 400 metre individual medley.

Barabe, 13, also took third in the 100 breast, helping qualify her for the Alberta Summer Championships July 4-7 in Edmonton.

Shilka added a silver in 200 breast, plus was fourth in the 100 and sixth in the 100 butterfly. She also qualified for the Summer Championships.

Other Waves at the provincial meet were Grace Jacobs and Johnathan Marshall. Jacobs, 13, made three finals with a best finish of fifth in the 50 metre backstroke. Marshall, 12, had a best finish of 12th in the 50 butterfly.

As for the Marlins, they had 11 athletes in the pool and one more more medallist. Munro Maxwell was second in the 100 fly and third in the 100 freestyle, plus took fourth in the 50 fly. Jocelyn Macphail (fourth in 100 fly) and Ethan Rochon (sixth in 400 IM) also made it to the top-eight in their respective events.

Johnathan Marshall (12) – 50 fly, 12th; 100 free, 23rd; 50 breast, 25th; 50 free, 29th.

Girls 13-14

Jaivyn Barabe (13) – 50 breast, first; 100 breast, third; 50 back, 24th; 100 free, 25th; 50 free, 36th.

Grace Jacobs (13) – 50 back, fifth; 100 back, sixth; 200 back, sixth; 50 fly, 18th; 200 IM, 20th.
