Medicine Hat’s Colton Medwed is set to represent his city as the lone host local at the Alberta Motocross Championship this weekend.

The 15-year-old rider – who races out of both the SuperMini and junior 250cc classes – took part in the event alongside his older brother Logan when it was last in Medicine Hat, in 2017, but this time he’ll be the only one with a hometown cheering section at the Medicine Hat Motocross Park.

“It’s great,” said Medwed. “If I put in some good finishes it’ll be really good for my friends and family to see.”

The weekend will feature the second and third legs of the provincial championship circuit, which concludes with the TransCan Grand National Championships in Calgary from. Aug. 12-17.

Medwed kicked off his season by taking eighth overall in the SuperMini class and 20th in junior 250cc in the first round of the championship last weekend in Raymond.

The Hat product took fifth and ninth in his two SuperMini motos to collect 28 points in the standings, but was left with just three points in the junior 250cc after finishing 19th and 20th.

While Friday’s wet weather – and more rain potentially coming over the weekend – will likely have an impact on the course, Medwed says he welcomes the challenge.

“I perform really good in the mud,” he said. “I prefer the mud over a drier track that’s rough.”

The Alberta Motocross Championship features 22 different classes, ranging from 50cc to 250cc, as well as pro-am, open, ladies, and veteran divisions and more.

The long weekend of high-octane action gets underway with a practice day Saturday before racing takes over the course for both Sunday and Monday.

The action begins at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday and Monday at the Medicine Hat Motocross Park.
