Eagle Butte duo wins B-side silver at provincial badminton championship

Eagle Butte Talons Triston Duchscherer and Lexie Waldbauer closed the book on their high school badminton season with a B-side silver medal at the Alberta Schools Athletic Association provincial championships in Calgary this weekend.

After finishing the intermediate mixed doubles group stage at 1-2, the Dunmore duo won two straight matches in the B-side elimination bracket – besting Mayerthorpe’s Jayden Beals and Alli Manegre, 21-9, 21-9, then Hillside’s Reid Dorsheid and Michala Serediak, 21-17, 21-18 – before falling 21-16, 23-21 to Lillian Osborne’s Rachel Chan and Kevin Shao in the consolation final.

Fellow Talon Aiden Heller fell just shy of the intermediate boys singles B-side podium after dropping a 21-17, 21-16 contest to Beaverlodge Regional’s Reece Lojczyc in the third-place game. Heller finished the group stage at 0-3 then defeated Chestermere’s Chazz Meszeros, 21-17, 28-26 before falling in the B-side semifinal to Holy Trinity’s Ernesto Montes, 21-18, 29-27.

In the junior girls doubles class, Talons Raquel Waldbauer and Mackenzie Duchscherer – sisters to Lexie and Triston – were knocked out of B-side medal contention after going 1-3 in the group stage then dropping a 21-17, 16-21, 21-15 battle to Westwood’s Shreeya Patel and Simar Randhawa in their first elimination match.

Hat High’s Alexa Alino and Phoebe Gamao left Calgary with a B-side bronze medal in the senior girls doubles division after picking up a 16-21, 21-14, 21-19 victory over Dewberry’s Nicole Dennill and Tia Dyck in the third-place game. Alino and Gamao went 1-2 in the group stage, then defeated Barrhead’s Kayla Gelderman and Charissa Verheul, 22-20, 21-15, before falling to Red Deer’s Erica Greenshields and Mataya Rideout, 21-12, 21-19, to find themselves playing for bronze.

McCoy Colts Jordyn Fournier and Parker Hope fell short of the senior mixed doubles A-side podium after falling 21-8, 21-11 to Calgary Crescent Heights’ Irene Pham and Dennis Lieu in the quarter-finals. Fournier and Hope closed out the group stage with a 2-1 record to advance to the quarter-finals.

In the senior boys doubles division, McCoy’s Brent Folk and Ryley Manz settled for a B-side quarter-final departure after dropping a tight 16-21, 21-12, 21-19 contest to Barrhead’s Nathan Schuring and Tyler Strydhorst. The local duo went 0-3 in the group stage.

Hat High’s Kurt Magwali and Denrei Tabaum were knocked out of the junior boys doubles tournament in their first B-side match, falling 21-12, 21-15 to St. Paul’s Matheo Marin and Bradley Mistol after going 0-3 in the group stage.

Fellow Mohawk Sebastian Wissler bowed out in his senior boys singles B-side opener, falling 21-18, 21-17 to Holy Trinity’s Ed Justin after finishing the group stage at 0-3.
