The Medicine Hat Mud Hens completed a perfect run at the Ed Horvath Interprovincial Classic ringette tournament with a 4-0 victory over the Winnipeg Blaze on Sunday at the Kinplex.

For many of the under-16 A squad’s players, the championship stood as their fourth consecutive gold as hosts of the local tournament.

“It’s amazing,” said Mud Hens goalie Sydney Carlson. “I love having our home tournament because all of our friends get to come out and support. And then getting the shutout today is just the cherry on top.”

Jaida Wallis opened the scoring then set up captain Sheriday Herman later in the first period to put the Mud Hens up by a pair at the break.

Marin Sinclair tacked onto the lead three minutes into the second then Amanda put the Robinson put the game away with less than three minutes left.

All that remained was locking down the shutout. While it didn’t come easily, as the Mud Hens put themselves on the wrong end of a 5-on-3 situation for the final two minutes of the game, Carlson kept the paddle down to secure the shutout, and with it the championship.

“That was a little drop in my heart. It was so stressful,” said Carlson. “It was something that we wanted to have, so just having that is amazing. Our defence is so strong.”

The victory capped off a 5-0 run over three days at the tournament. Mud Hens head coach Marty Robinson says the team puts a lot of emphasis on fitness, and it paid off over the weekend.

“We work hard on our fitness. We dryland once a week, we’re on the ice two-to-three times a week and then games on the weekend. These are some great athletes,” said Robinson. “It’s a great bunch of kids and we’re having a great year.”

The Mud Hens kicked off the tournament with a 7-4 win over Northwest and a 5-2 victory over the Bow View Surge Friday, then followed it up by defeating the Blaze 6-1 Saturday and doubling up on Northwest 8-4 Sunday morning to set up their place in the final.
