Rattlers men’s soccer team eliminated from playoff contention

The Medicine Hat Rattlers men’s soccer team was eliminated from Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference playoff contention following their 2-0 loss to the Ambrose Lions Friday night and Lethbridge’s 5-0 win over Ambrose Saturday.

Matthew Wideman scored both of Ambrose’s goals in Friday night’s match in Calgary, opening the scoring in the 32nd minute then doubling up in the 48th.

The setback left Medicine Hat at 4-5-1 on the season, then their Highway 3 rival Kodiaks climbed to 6-3-1 with Saturday’s win — locking up Lethbridge’s playoff berth by stretching their gap over the Rattlers to six points with two games remaining. Lethbridge holds the tiebreaker after defeating 2-1 earlier this month.

Women’s squad picks up second win

The Rattlers women’s squad rallied to a 3-0 victory over the Ambrose Lions Friday, lifting the team to 2-7-1 on the year.

Cassidy LaRochelle opened the scoring early in the second half then Kaylei Hole put the game away with goals in the 65th and 71st minutes.

Rattlers goalkeeper Kassidy Suberlak collected the win on four saves. Ambrose’s Karina Kurtzweg stopped three in the loss. The Lions went on to defeat Lethbridge 1-0 Saturday, putting them at 3-5-1 on the year.

The Rattlers soccer teams return to the Snake Pit this weekend to close out the season against the Lakeland Rustlers Saturday and Red Deer College Sunday.

Men improve to 2-0 on the hardwood

The Medicine Hat Rattlers men’s basketball team cruised to a 2-0 start to the ACAC season by following up Friday’s win over St. Mary’s with an 85-65 victory over the Olds Broncos Saturday night at the Snake Pit.

Jaamel Slack led the Rattlers with 21 points in the game while forward Osato Obaseki collected a double-double with 10 points and 19 rebounds.

Olds took over a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Rattlers stormed back with 25 points in the second quarter to take a 34-33 lead at the break then tacked on 51 points in the second half. Terrence Crisostomo and Muktar Mohamed led the Broncos in the loss, dropping Olds to 0-1 on the year.

Women stay perfect

The Rattlers women’s basketball team kept their perfect start to the ACAC season alive with a 75-59 victory over the Olds Broncos Saturday.

Guard Kendell Kuntz led the offence with 23 points in the victory while Kiana Mintz added 13 and Hayley LePard chipped in with six boards from the bench.

Brittney Thibeaux led the Broncos with a game-high 34 points, but Olds was unable to dig their way out of an early 11-point hole and slipped to 0-1 on the year.

The win puts Medicine Hat at 2-0.

The Rattlers return to the Snake Pit Saturday to host the Briercrest Clippers.

Men’s volleyball squadsweeps Olds

KeAndre Evans led the Medicine Hat Rattlers to a three-set sweep of the Olds Broncos (25-18, 25-22, 26-24) Sunday in Olds with seven kills and seven digs.

Edvard Nordlund and Alfred Dalevik followed up with six kills apiece while Austyn Ducharme led the defence with 10 digs and Avery Triggs had 13 assists.

Olds’ Tyson Deschene had a match-high nine kills while Lane Matthews added 22 assists in the loss — dropping the Broncos to 0-2.

Medicine Hat improved to 2-0 with the win.

Women improve to 2-0

The Rattlers shared the wealth en route to a straight sets victory over the Olds Broncos (25-16, 25-12, 25-10) on the road Saturday.

Amber Stigter and Jennifer Saj both recorded seven kills, and Brooke Christie and Janelle Neyron added four apiece in the victory.

Neyron and Shaya Suchy both logged 11 digs on defence, while Saj added 17 assists to help the Rattlers improve to 2-0 on the ACAC season.

Medicine Hat managed to limit Broncos leader Karley Dieken to just four kills, while Emily Zaleschuk added 10 digs.

The Rattlers hit the road to take on the Ambrose Lions Friday before both teams make the trip to the Snake Pit Saturday for Medicine Hat’s home opener.
