While the Medicine Hat Cubs are undergoing a transition, they’re going to start their exhibition season against a brand new team in the Heritage Junior B Hockey League.

New Cubs president Dave Kowalchuk announced Thursday that Medicine Hat will host the expansion Lomond Lakers in a pre-season game Friday, Sept. 14, 7:30 p.m. at the Kinplex.

With training camp set for Sept. 7-9, the team will waste no time getting ready for the regular season once its roster is set. Kowalchuk, who talked after his introduction as president about running the Cubs more like a junior A franchise, says the remainder of the schedule should be finalized next week.

The Cubs are even starting their season ticket blitz early, running a booth at next week’s Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede. Kowalchuk said he’d like to sell upwards of 200 season tickets, for about the average number of fans the team saw in the stands last season.

“That’s a good goal starting late in the game here,” he wrote via text message.

Lomond gives the Heritage league 14 teams, becoming the seventh in the Southern Division. All but one team made the playoffs last year, with the Cubs losing their first-round series 2-1 to Cochrane.
