The Medicine Hat Mavericks extended their winning streak to eight games in epic fashion on Wednesday night at Athletic Park.

After trading blows with the Okotoks Dawgs to trail 6-5 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mavericks rallied for five runs — capped off by a bases-clearing triple off the bat of catcher David Vilches — to steal away the lead before marching to an 11-6 victory.

Vilches closed out the night with 5 RBI in a 2-for-4 outing, while Louie Canjura went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI — including a solo home run in the first. Nolan Rattai added an RBI double in the eighth to finish 1-for-5.

Mavericks reliever Barry Caine collected the victory after taking over the mound in the fifth and holding the Dawgs to a pair of runs on three hits and a walk while fanning four batters through 2 and 2/3 innings.

Relievers Julien Ly and Sean Cruz combined to shut down the Dawgs in the final two innings and send Medicine Hat to 8-2 on the season.

Mavericks starter Evan Sutta left after allowing four runs on six hits through 4 and 2/3.

Dawgs relief pitcher Jordan Pepper was dealt the loss after allowing two runs on a hit through 1/3 of the seventh inning. Starter Brock Townsend left after allowing five runs on six hits through four complete innings of work.

Okotoks slipped to 7-3 with the loss.

The Mavericks and Dawgs return to Athletic Park tonight for a rematch at 7:05 p.m.
