Medicine Hat High School athletes had their hard work and determination pay off Tuesday evening at the annual athletic banquet.

The school has roughly 400 student athletes taking part in at least one sport, and many play multiple.

Awards were given out for sportsmanship, athletic ability, dedication and much more.

“It’s great for us to see all of our athletes’ hard work pay off,” said principal Boris Grisonich. “We know how much time and effort these kids put into being student athletes at Hat High, so it’s nice for us to be able to recognize that.

“We have so many great athletes in every grade, and so many great coaches who help make everything happen.”

Grade 12 student Rhiannon Ware left Tuesday’s banquet with her fair share of hardware, including the top female athlete of the year award. She says receiving it is an honour.

“It’s an exciting award to get,” she said. “It means that there’s people at the school that are acknowledging my success, and it’s a comfortable feeling to know I can stand out.

“Tonight is one of those nights that really makes you feel rewarded.”

Ware was part of the Hat High Kwahommies basketball and volleyball teams and also took part in track and field. She will be going to school next year at Medicine Hat College and has committed to the Rattlers basketball team. She says anyone thinking of becoming a student athlete should take the plunge.

“Follow your heart,” she said. “If it’s what you want to do — don’t second guess it.”

Landon Schwartz was named male athlete of the year, but was not in attendance.
