The Medicine Hat Mavericks had a rousing rally cut short on Saturday at Seaman Stadium.

While the Mavs managed to erase an early 3-0 deficit with three runs in the eighth inning, Riley Baasch stepped up to re-establish a lead for the Okotoks Dawgs with a solo shot in the home half of the frame, then Craig Smith shut down the Mavericks in the ninth to collect the save and send Medicine Hat into the Western Major Baseball League season with an 0-1 record.

Louie Canjura picked up each of Medicine Hat’s first three hits to finish 3-for-4, then the Mavs struck for three with a pair of walk-in runs and a wild pitch. Hatter Nolan Rattai finished with Medicine Hat’s lone RBI in the contest.

Sean Cruz took the loss for Medicine Hat after allowing the go-ahead blast off Baasch. Jordan Pepper collected the win after after cleaning up in the eighth inning.

The Mavericks return to Athletic Park for their home opener tonight at 7:05 p.m. against the Brooks Bombers.
