Opening day for the Medicine Hat Mavericks was delayed by rain Thursday, with the team calling off their game against the Brooks Bombers Wednesday around 10:30 a.m.

Players welcomed the rest day after a busy week of mini camp, getting to know each other, the city and figuring out team strategies ahead of the 48-game Western Major Baseball League campaign.

Jared Libke will still get the start in Friday’s previously scheduled 7:05 p.m. game against the Bombers, while Thursday’s game will now be played Monday, June 11 on what originally was to be an off-day.

Bombers coach Kyle MacKinnon — who coached with the Mavs in 2016 and Fort McMurray last year — said he’s going with right-handed senior Brandon Hillier who played at Indiana Tech this past college season.

Medicine Hat will play in Okotoks Saturday for the Dawgs’ home opener, then return home to face the Dawgs and Lethbridge Bulls on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
