Two wins ensured the Medicine Hat Avalanche will compete for a provincial ringette title.
The under-19 team claimed one of four spots from their zone tournament in Calgary this past weekend, beating the Airdrie/Cochrane Thunder 5-4 and the Bowview Braves 9-1.
Only seven teams were in the competition, separated into two round robin pools. Medicine Hat only needed to finish first or second in their three-team pool, which they did with ease.
Up 5-1 on the Thunder Saturday with three goals from Camryn Selwood and the others from Erica Brost and Alyssa Gosse, the lead nearly slipped away. Medicine Hat hung on in that one but wasn’t about to let it happen twice. Lauren Hughes had five goals against the Braves, with Emily Hudson, Alexandra Stanke, Jensen Wilk and Jenna McDonnell potting the others. Sydney Stasienko was 1:33 away from a shutout, but more importantly the team has another weekend of games now.
Provincials are in Lacombe starting March 24.
The only other Hat team in action this past weekend was the under-16 squad, which hosted provincials in Irvine. Alas, Spruce Grove beat Cochrane in Sunday’s final and advances to Westerns.
Only one Hat team has a provincial tournament this coming weekend. The Attack are in under-14 A championships in Lethbridge starting Friday morning and will play St. Albert, Lethbridge and Bowview in round robin play.
