It was a slow start but Hat High’s Mohawks made sure there was no doubt in the finish on home turf Friday night.

At the Methanex Bowl, the local high school football team was up just 1-0 through the first quarter of their exhibition game against Taber’s WR Myers Rebels.

But the Mohawks started to wear down their opponent and eventually steamrolled to a 36-15 victory.

Tanner Winter ran for a late first half touchdown and Sanjay Grover threw another to Simon Frolick, finally cracking the Rebels defence. Ethan Scott had a kickoff return for a major, Frolick got a second TD and Blake Carriere-Smith rounded out the parade to the end zone for the hosts.

Now 5-1 overall, the Mohawks are in Calgary to play Rundle College Thursday.

At No. 8 in the Tier 2 rankings released by Football Alberta, Hat High could learn a lot about where they sit as Rundle is ranked No. 5 in Tier 3 and Crescent Heights right behind them in Tier 3 at sixth. The Vikings have a bye week, with both squads heading to Brooks Saturday for a jamboree where their younger players will get extra reps.
