JACK BURNS

JACK BURNS 1946 ~ 2024 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William John “Jack” Burns, beloved husband of Linda Burns and the only child of Bill and Doris Burns. Jack passed away at the age of 78 in the Medicine Hat Hospital on October 23, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer and his heart. He kept his great attitude right to the end. Jack was Linda’s best friend, and husband for 56 years. Jack is survived by his wife, Linda Burns; his two daughters who loved him dearly, Tammy Burns of Medicine Hat, and Jay Jay Burns of Calgary, and two granddaughters Taylor (Levi) Janzen of Surrey, B.C., and Zoey Heukshorst of Medicine Hat. They loved their papa dearly.
Before moving from Brandon, Manitoba, Jack worked for 35 years as an office equipment specialist technician. He was known and loved by many family, friends, and the children at the school where he worked for years as a custodian. He will always be remembered by the way he talked like Donald Duck.

VERNER, Christine Elizabeth

VERNER, Christine Elizabeth August 20, 1946 November 16, 2024 Christine Verner (nee McPike) our Scottish lass, born in Glasgow, Scotland on August 20, 1946, left our earthly world in Calgary, November 16, 2024. Christine was predeceased by her parents Ana and Alexander McPike, brother Francis, and sister Annemarie. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Bob, siblings, Jim McPike (Patti), Marianne Rowland (Gene), Alex McPike (Robynne), Kathleen Beierbach (Ken), Margaret McPike (Craig Jones) and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Christine was gainfully employed in a wide range of activities, general insurance receptionist being the mainstay occupation over a period of several decades. Her wit and constant sense of humour was a welcome feature for her family, friends, and colleagues over the years.

CLAIRE JEAN SERGEANT August 1st, 1936 November 7th, 2024
It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Claire Jean Sergeant on November 7th, 2024, at the age of 88 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her son, David (Sandy) Sergeant; daughters, Pamela Sergeant and Angela Sergeant; grandchildren, Matthew, Darren, Amy (Chris), Kara (Milo), Dey (Geoff), Murrae (Dan), Desiree (Mike) and Levi (Steph); great grandchildren, Coleton (Ashlee), Kaidence, Brandt, Davis, Darian, Olivia, Jack, Layla, Ava, Malcolm, Frankie and Ella; great great grandchildren, Nevaeh, Hudson and Parker; sisters, Evelina, Rosemarie and Margueritte. Claire was predeceased by her husband, Jim Sergeant (2015); parents, William and Mary Barker; daughter, Laura Collier (February 2020); son, Brad (April 2019); grandchildren, Chris Collier (August 2013) and Jennifer Collier (June 1983); son-in-law, Ross Collier (July 2024).
Claire was born on August 1st, 1936, in Russell, Manitoba and raised on the nearby family farm in Binscarth. She had scarlet fever, which kept her home at the end of her final year of high school; but she graduated on her merit. Afterwards, Claire taught on the Koostatak reserve and waitressed in Virden along with her sister, Evelina. It was at the restaurant that she met Jim and Evelina met Fred; they had a double wedding on April 21st, 1956. Claire and Jim lived in a trailer at the rig sites that Jim worked at, until she was expecting their 3rd child, and then they settled in Medicine Hat. After their 5th child was in school, Claire went to the University of Lethbridge where she achieved a Bachelor of Education with an Early Childhood major. She started teaching Grade 2 at Riverside School, then Webster Niblock, and ended her 15-year career at George Davison School when she retired in 1992. She was part of the Southern Alberta Early Childhood Education Council throughout her career. Following retirement, she became involved with the Alberta Retired Teacher’s Association. She was awarded a Lifetime Membership in the Association. Claire was committed to her family and her community. She volunteered through the church with breakfast at Elm Street School, and other venues. She also volunteered at the college, teaching English to exchange students. She and Jim were also long-time members of the Historical Society of Medicine Hat and District. All who knew Claire will miss her sense of humour, wit and generosity.

ORVILLE RICHARD BARNSTABLE

ORVILLE RICHARD BARNSTABLE August 1st, 1925 November 17th, 2024
“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints”. Ps. 116 :15 Orville Richard Barnstable was born on a farm at Macoun on August 1,1925. He was the third son of Roy and Susan Barnstable (Granger). He grew up on the farm and enjoyed the animals, especially his favorite horse, “King”. He was happy to serve his country in 1944, during his time in the army, and subsequently went to the U of Sask for a year, and then spent a couple of years in Bible School. He moved back to the farm and met the local schoolteacher, Ethel Janke. They married in 1949 and continued farming. God had other plans for him, and he began a new career in 1955 as a high school teacher at International Bible College near Outram. He moved to Moose Jaw when the College moved there and was the High School Principal until 1966. He took a year off from teaching in 1967 to finish his degree at the U of Regina. Following his graduation the family moved to the Northwest Territories for 3 years and then back to Moose Jaw where he taught at Peacock High School until his retirement. Orville and Ethel continued to live in Moose Jaw until 1993 when they moved to Medicine Hat. He and Ethel lived there until his homegoing on Nov 17, 2024. Orville was a selfless helper who freely gave of his time to help others. He was a gifted teacher as shown by comments from students many years later of the affect he had on their lives. He loved music and was a man of deep commitment to Jesus. He didn’t just talk the life of a Christian, he lived it. Orville was predeceased by his father and mother, Roy and Susie; his brothers, Bob, Ray and Bill and his younger sisters, Gayle and Myrna. He is survived by his wife, Ethel; his brother, Kirk; his sons, Blaine (Sandra) and Dallas; as well as his daughters, Laurie and Joanne (Kent). His legacy also includes 8 grandchildren and 9 great grand children

KAREN JAKUBOWSKY

KAREN JAKUBOWSKY 1944 – 2024 Karen Ruth Jakubowsky, beloved wife for 45 years of Albert Jakubowsky of Manyberries, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. Karen was a beloved member of the Manyberries School for 33 years from 1976 until the school’s closure in 2009, where she spent time as a secretary and teachers aide. Karen was known for her love and dedication to the school and the children. A private burial will take place with Karen’s family in attendance. She also leaves to cherish her memory three children Neil (Tamra) Sibley, Kenny (Dawn) Jakubowsky, Mark (Christine) Jakubowsky and daughter-in-law Debbie Sibley; her grandchildren Jessa (Brett), Sarah (Justin), Aryssa (Tyrel), Raylah (Ty), Jay, Keanna, Stevie, Ella and Emilee; eleven great grandchildren; her youngest sister Shelley (Travis) McKinley and brother-in-law Walter Seefried. She was predeceased by her parents Melvin and Velma Neilson; her younger sister Bonnie and her son Jason. No funeral service will be held.
