1921 – MARTIN SCHLINKER – 2021

Martin Schlinker passed away on October 19, 2021, 11 days before his 100th birthday; beloved husband for 63 years of the late Maureen Schlinker (nee Garlough). He leaves to cherish his memory three children, Brian (Norma) Schlinker, Brenda Hornung, Mark Schlinker; seven grandchildren, Rhonda (Todd) Olson, Barry Schlinker (Alma Gacias), Christine (Mark) Stock, Kelly Hornung, Laura Hornung, Brandon Schlinker, Breanna Schlinker (Tyson Canning); nine great-grandchildren, Cameron Stock (Dana Cook), Courtney Stock (Tanner Dynes), Connor Stock, Cassidy Stock, Cole Olson, Kinley Olson, Katelyn Olson, Sawyer Hornung and Hudson Schlinker.
Martin was the youngest of nine children born to Martin and Maria Schlinker. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers and sisters and their spouses; Jack (Kate), Fred (Olga), Molly (Frank) Stuber, Justine Kent, Emma (Jack) Stickel, John (Frieda), Meada (Albert) Heidinger and Bertha (Earl) Fraser. He was raised on the family farm in the Wisdom area, and it was there he gained his strong work ethic. He had many adventures as a young man but none that equaled joining the Canadian Army at the age of 21 and serving his country. Martin was wounded in Germany and while recuperating the war ended. He remained in Holland as part of the peacekeeping corps and returned from Europe in August 1946.
Upon his return from Europe, Martin met, and married Maureen Garlough and they resided and raised their family in Medicine Hat. He was employed by Medicine Hat School District #76 as custodian at Alexandra Junior High School and then at Medicine Hat High School. When the “new” college was built Martin transferred there in the position of head custodian until his retirement. He enjoyed his retirement years and passed the time camping, golfing, and gardening (oh, those tomatoes and peppers!). Martin and Maureen travelled extensively in their motorhome including a trip to eastern Canada, and New York and also visited Mexico but returning to Holland to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands was extraordinary for Martin and Maureen. They made very special friends on that trip and spoke so highly of the respect bestowed on the veterans and of the special events they took part in (i.e. parade through the streets of Apeldoorn).
Martin was a proud member for 70 years and was a past executive member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #17. He was also past Governor of the Moose Lodge Branch 1073 for the 1960-61 term and was the longest consecutive member of the local Moose Lodge, being a member since 1953.
After Maureen’s passing in 2011, Martin remained in the home they shared until moving to Chinook Village in 2014 and then to River Ridge in 2019.
Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Masks are mandatory. A private family funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Friday, October 22, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with The Rev. Dr. David Carter officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. Officers and members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Robertson Memorial Branch #17 will conduct a poppy service for their departed comrade. Due to the restrictions brought forward by the Chief Medical Officer of Health, indoor public gatherings are to be kept to 50 people. BERKHOLD, G.A. (GERRY)

August 28, 1938 – October 12,2021

In the middle of the night, just hours before passing, as was his way, Gerry took command of the details and dictated his specific wishes for this obituary.
He said he is forever grateful to his wife Beverly for 57 extraordinary years and to his sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren; Gordon, Traci and Aidan and Graham, Karen, Emma and Sophia.
He noted his pleasure from his career in banking (CIBC), concrete (Texas, USA), distilling (Highwood Distillers), property investments (Southern USA) and farming (Flying G Farms, Medicine Hat); and expressed his gratitude for the gifted medical support of Dr. Paul Pashniak (Helios Wellness Center) and Dr. Saraj Hussain (Tom Baker Cancer Center – Brachytherapy).
Gerry was very proud of his “Prairie Roots” and being raised in the culture and friendship of Redcliff, Alberta. He, along with the 1944 Grade 1 Class honoured those friends by establishing and growing the Redcliff Scholarship Fund to support Redcliff students pursuing post-high school education.
Gerry had a wonderful experience at U of A, graduating Commerce 1960 and solidified his lifelong pursuit of learning. Together, he and Bev nurtured their U of A friendships through to today, hosting folks at their farm and offering their time and financial support to causes dear to their friends.
Gerry’s remarkable focus, sense of purpose and skills at organizing were highly developed. He loved business; talking about it, reading about it, making a deal, operating and constantly growing and improving. He was blessed with great partners and strong and loyal teams creating amazing cultures and results over the years. Gerry’s success allowed him to make community investments with his time and financial support. He quietly and consistently sought to make his community better and more resilient.
He had a unique, nearly irresistible way of making people come around to his way of thinking. He was a force and will be deeply missed by those who enjoyed the benefit of his wisdom, humour and energy.
Above all Gerry was a caring, generous husband, father and grandfather and a sturdy, loyal friend.
Some random things he enjoyed; birds (especially bird houses and fountains), horses (Old Riders of the West trips), counting cows, time at and talking about the farm, reading, moments of contemplation, grandchildren, walking group trips, prairie sunsets, a well-constructed Martini or Manhattan at the end of the day with family and friends.
There will be a private family service at Hillside cemetery in Medicine Hat and a celebration of life event in Calgary – details to follow.
In lieu of flowers, Gerry requested a tax-deductible donation be made to the Redcliff Scholarships – contact Pat Cocks, Scholarship Fund Administrator, by email at pcocks@hotmail.com for details.
Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed on Gerry’s obituary at http://www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
