1928 – LEONARD NELSEN – 2020

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Leonard Nelsen on Monday, November 30th, 2020. Leonard leaves to cherish his memory his beloved daughters: Doris Barnes, Elaine (Doug) Turner, Renee (Maurice) Trottier; nine grandchildren: Aurora (Bobby), Rhett (Lynda), Sonja (Ryan), Brittney (Ryan), Gisele (David), Celeste (Graham), Claire (Anthony), Dominic and Stefan; eleven great grandchildren; his sisters, Mary and Dorothy; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Leonard was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Florence; son, Eugene in infancy; son-in-law, Hank; grandson-in-law, Steve; and one sister, Gladys and husband, Bill; and two brothers-in-law, Norman and Marcel. Leonard was born in Medicine Hat and raised North of Irvine. He attended Long Valley School. Leonard married Florence Mayer in December 1951. Together they made their home on the family farm North of Irvine until 1997, at which time they retired to Medicine Hat. Throughout the years Leonard was actively involved in the community serving in various positions on many boards: UFA, Clearwater Hall, Irvine Mutual Telephone Company, Many Island Grazing Association, Bow Island Grazing Association, Dr. Dan MacCharles Auxiliary Hospital, which later merged with the Medicine Hat & District Hospital Board, 40 Mile Gas Co-op, the Irvine Chinook Club, Irvine Peace United Church, Irvine Complex, and Irvine and District Ag Society. In 1990, Dad was honoured to receive the Volunteer Recognition Award from Cypress County and Irvine Communities. For several years, Leonard and Florence enjoyed being part of the Good Sam RV Club. Dad enjoyed spending holidays and special occasions with family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be remembered for his work ethic, honesty, integrity, wisdom and love of family. Due to current Covid-19 restrictions limiting funeral attendance to 10 people, a private family Funeral Service will be held at Peace United Church, 28 Pacific Avenue Irvine, AB T0J 1V0, on Thursday, December 3rd, 2020 with Gary W. Goran officiating. Private interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. 1931 ~ RONALD JAMES CYR ~ 2020

Ronald James “Ron” Cyr of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of the late Jennie Cyr, passed away on Monday, November 30th, 2020 at the age of 89 years. Ronald leaves to cherish his memory his daughters; Donna Dueck of Beaverlodge, AB, and Holly Cyr (Ken) Morrison of Edmonton, AB; and grandchildren, Koby, Kira, Rachael, and Quinn. Ronald was predeceased by his wife, Jennie; parents, John and Emilie Cyr; and daughter, Terry Van Der Kaaden. Ron was born in Brooks, AB, July 22nd, 1931, where he grew up and attended school. Following high school, he began working as a power linesman for Calgary Power and then for Sask Power. In 1959, he started his own business in Medicine Hat that provided well servicing and hot shot services. He also trained as an instrument technician and was able to utilize his skills to work in compressor stations. Ron retired from full time business in 1996, but continued to drive bus from Medicine Hat to the Suffield base for some time. During his leisure time, Ron enjoyed travelling throughout Canada, the United States, and Asia. He was especially fond of the time he was able to vacation in Japan, China and the Philippines. At home, Ron was an avid RC aircraft enthusiast. He particularly enjoyed planning and constructing his own model aircrafts as well as flying them. Ron was proud of his family and enjoyed spending time with them and he will be deeply missed. 1935 ~ JEAN HUNTER ~ 2020

Jean Mavis Hunter of Medicine Hat passed away on Saturday, November 28th, 2020 at the age of 95 years. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, Adrian (Sharon) Hunter, Wendy (Doug) Ferguson and Amanda Hunter; 11 grandchildren and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Jean was predeceased by her loving husband, Frank and her son, Francis. Jean was born in Turnbridge Wells, Kent, England on September 14th, 1925 to George and Marie Woodgate. She was raised and educated in Turnbridge along with her brother, Alan, and sister, Marie. Jean attended the local dances as a young girl, and it was there that she met a young man named Frank who offered to walk her home. She was concerned that he would not find his way back, but he did. He was soon to become the love of her life and they were married. In 1945, while Frank was away in the army, Jean was offered a ticket for herself and her young son to move to Canada, provided she left within 24 hours and without Frank. Jean took the ticket and settled in Brandon, Manitoba where Frank later joined them following his honourable discharge from the army. Two continents conquered! Jean worked as a hairdresser, as well as at the local hospital in the children’s ward while still maintaining her home and raising her family. She also worked in the shoe department of the Eaton’s department store, which seemed appropriate considering her love of shoes. As busy as she found herself to be, Jean was able to find the time to lend her voice to the area’s Philharmonic choir and also indulge her love of sewing, which she shared with her daughters. In 1980, Jean and Frank moved to Medicine Hat to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Jean was especially fond of spending time with her grandchildren and maintained a close and trusting relationship with them, quickly becoming a trusted confidante. She will be deeply and sadly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Brian Wallace Smail passed away on December 1, 2020 at the age of 78 years, beloved husband of Hanna Smail of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory his son, Chris (Lorrie); two grandchildren, Kori (Cam) Ryks and Shelden Smail; three great grandchildren, Sadie, Jaxon and Asher; his sister, Linda (Owen) Anderson as well as numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Mary Smail and son Mark on April 5, 1985. A private family service will take place in the spring. January 31, 1968 ~ November 30, 2020

Mr. Garth Neil Ferguson, beloved husband and soulmate of Pam, passed away at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary on Monday, November 30, 2020, at the age of 52 years. Along with Pam, Garth will be lovingly remembered by his son, Dustin (Kendra) and their children, Dax, Ty and Jordyn; daughter, Tanya (Kyle) Biko and their daughter, Kaydance; parents, Don and Audrey Ferguson; sister, Laurie (Rod) Phillips; brother, Mark (Lisa) Ferguson; sister-in-law, Monica (and his brother from another mother, Mark); numerous nieces and nephews; aunt and uncles, Bibi (Keith) Laurie, Clarence Seefried and Bill Ferguson as well as his empty-nest babies, Kaycee and Carl. Garth was predeceased by his grandmother, Dorothy Ferguson; mother-in-law, Esther as well as his brothers-in-law, Harry, Elroy and Ray (Pork). Garth was a master craftsman taking his work very seriously, caring and looking out for his co-workers. His job was paramount as a protector for his family whom he loved unconditionally. Garth was a very devoted husband and had an undying love for Pam; she would not have grown to be the person she is without him. Garth was the strength of his family being a good judge of character and honourable man who had a sentimental heart. He was a great leader and loved to share his knowledge while mentoring others. It is with a broken heart that Gerry announces the passing of her beloved husband, Gordon Maurice Paulson, after lengthy heart issues. He passed away at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Sunday, November 29, 2020, at the age of 82 years. Along with Gerry, he will be remembered by his sons, James and Gord; James’ son, Lucas as well as Gordon’s sister, Myrna Frey and her family. Gordon was a man of great pride in which was reflected in his perfect lawn that was meticulously cut and his ‘53 Chev custom he spent the last 30 years refurbishing… it was Gordon’s true pride and joy.
