1932 ~ RONALD COLEMAN ~ 2020

Ronald Frederick Coleman of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Deanna Coleman, passed away on Monday, March 30th, 2020 at the age of 87 years. Ronald leaves to cherish his memory his children, Wendy (Owen) Jalbert and Lynn (Brian) Konrad; grandchildren, Kendall (Kacie) Jalbert, Marjorie (Samuel) Charles, Coleman (Christina) Konrad and Brianne Konrad; brother, Jim (Lynn) Coleman, sister, Joan Bell; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ronald was predeceased by his parents, Reginald and Florence Coleman and brother, Warren Coleman. Ronald was born on October 12th, 1932 in Saskatoon, SK. He moved with his family at an early age to Kamloops B.C. before settling in New Brunswick. Following his graduation from Hampton Consolidated High School he began working at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Hampton, NB. Over the next few years, he transferred to Oshawa, ON and then finally settled in Medicine Hat, AB. In 1956, he started working at the McAvity Foundry, retiring as the manager of Clow Canada in 1992. Ron married his sweetheart, Deanna, on June 29th, 1957, in Fifth Avenue United Church in Medicine Hat and together they raised their family. Ron spent many years volunteering as a cub leader and member of Fifth Avenue United Church and he also served on the board of the Medicine Hat Co-op. Ron loved to travel and was fortunate to visit many destinations in the world as well as many vacations with his family travelling across Canada and the United States. He enjoyed square dancing, gardening, and spending time with family. Ron looked forward to watching the Medicine Hat Tigers and spending time with his friends every morning over coffee in the Mall Food Court. His great grandchildren, Rebekah, Leah, Gideon Charles and Carter, Cade and Ava Konrad held a special place in his heart and he was always happy to see them The family would like to thank the staff at Masterpiece Southlands Meadows for the excellent care provided to Ron during his time there. A Celebration of Ron’s life will take place at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 18th, 2020 at the Carriage House, Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede Grounds. 1951 ~ LARRY J. LESKO ~ 2020

Larry John Lesko, beloved husband of Helen Lesko, passed away peacefully on July 12th, 2020 at the age of 68 years. Larry leaves to cherish his memory his children, Chad (Carrie) and their children, Brody and Skylar; Damien and his children Samantha and Owen; Chelsea (Dylan) and their children, Allie and Evan. He will be lovingly remembered by five brothers, two sisters and their families. Larry was born on December 20th, 1951 in Montmartre, Saskatchewan. He married Helen Weisgerber, the love of his life, on June 26th, 1976. He was employed as a yardmaster with CP Rail for 35 years. Larry was an avid pool player and could be found in his spare time playing pool at the Veiner Centre and golfing with his family. Larry took pride in his 1973 ‘Cuda and attended many car shows with many close friends. Larry was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend and he will be missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be fondly remembered by his siblings as the family organizer, as he could often be found thinking of ways to get the family together. He had a great sense of humour and loved to share stories from the past. Above all, Larry cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren and took great joy in spending time with family and friends. Vigil Rites (Prayers) will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1 Dunmore Road SE, on July 16th, 2020. RICK BOKSTEYN

1958 – 2020

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Richard ‘Rick’ Boksteyn on Saturday, July 11, 2020. Rick leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Linda of 36 years; sons, Derik (Janelle) and Ben (Janae) and their daughter, Shelby; brothers, John (Deidra), Michael (Debbie) and Bradley and his sister-in-law, Gwynn (Robert) Boksteyn. Rick also leaves to mourn Linda’s sisters, Trudy (Eric) Papsdorf, Nellie (Don) Starke and Betty (Lloyd) Bischke as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Rick was predeceased by his parents, John and Yvette Boksteyn and brother, Daniel (Gwynn). Rick was the rock of his family. He was especially proud of his two sons, Derik and Ben. Rick was an incredible attentive parent and loved his family unconditionally. His boys were his greatest treasure and he cherished every day with them. Rick spent many weekends cooking and preparing great feasts for his family. His love language was good food prepared by Dick. His most recent joy was the arrival of his first grandchild, Shelby. Rick was employed by the City of Medicine Hat as a fire fighter for 35 years and recently retired. He was a dedicated firefighter and took his responsibilities very seriously. Rick was a coordinator for the dive rescue team for many years and coordinated many search and recovery missions in open water and ice incidents. He loved his job and enjoyed mentoring the new members with the fire service and serving the community. Rick truly valued the brotherhood within the department and was proud to call them his fire family. Rick was born and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He attended St. Louis School, McCoy High School and Medicine Hat College. During Rick’s younger years he had exceptional athletic abilities participating in competitive swimming, playing junior football for the Medicine Hat College Rattler Football team and playing Rugby for the Medicine Hat Ogres. When Rick decided to hang up his cleats from football and rugby, his love for the sports continued in a coaching capacity. He was a defensive coach for the McCoy Colts football team for 36 years. He had a true talent to inspire young players and was particularly interested in developing the players that needed extra encouragement and attention. Rick demonstrated exemplary leadership as a coach. He was generous with his time and support to the team. He strongly resisted any individual recognition or attention acknowledging his efforts. Instead he insisted focusing success on the combined efforts of players, coaches, teachers and parents. There was no “I” in team where Rick was concerned. Coaching was Rick’s greatest pleasure. He often said that coaching was a gift that allowed him to be 16 again. Rick had a passion for a collection of sport and luxury cars. He owned a collection of firebirds and in the last few years, began purchasing large comfort cars which were often referred to as “boats”. He was especially proud of his latest purchase of a 1978 Lincoln continental just prior to his illness. Rick was a good friend to all who knew him. He enjoyed time with friends drinking a Lucky at his garage and hosting tailgate get togethers. Rick never passed up an opportunity to have fun and spend time with his friends. He was well known in the community for his positive attitude and love for life. Rick lived 100 years in 62 and lived his life his way! He will be greatly missed by all that new him.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, July 17, 2020, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A Celebration of Rick’s Life will be held at the Methanex Bowl, 2000 Division Avenue North, Medicine Hat on Saturday, July 18, 2020. Kick-off will be at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Mike Landry officiating. Masks are mandatory and will be provided if you don’t have one. Please do not attend if you have traveled recently. Friends attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to assist in social distancing. Plans are being made for the service to be live streamed and details will be announced in the coming days. SHIRLEY SCHMIDT

1929 ~ 2020

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Shirley Mae Schmidt at the River Ridge Seniors Village in Medicine Hat on Saturday, July 11, 2020, at the age of 91 years. Left to cherish Shirley’s memory is her son, Bradley (Teresa); daughter, Pamela Dayle; grandchildren, Grant, William, Charlie and Matthew; step-grandchildren, Haley and Kylie as well as numerous siblings, nieces and nephews from Eastern Canada. She was predeceased by her husband, Verne in 2002 as well as her son, Grant in 1975. Shirley and Verne moved to Medicine Hat in 1973, where Verne taught electronics at Medicine Hat High School. She was a stay at home mom who dedicated herself to raising her children. A graveside service celebrating Shirley’s life will be held at Hillside Cemetery, 1280 – 10 Avenue S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, July 18, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. with Major Murray Jaster officiating.
