.1917 ~ BERRETH ~ 2014
Daniel Berreth, beloved husband of Mrs. Violet Berreth of Medicine Hat, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at the age of 97 years. Daniel also leaves to cherish his memory He is survived by his wife, Violet Berreth of Medicine Hat, AB; and son, Richard Berreth of Redcliff, AB. Daniel was preceded in death by Daniel Berreth of Medicine Hat passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, the day of his 97th birthday.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife Violet. Dan and Violet would have celebrated their 71st Anniversary on January 11th. Dan is also lovingly remembered by his only child, Richard (Marilyn) Berreth of Redcliff, three granddaughters and six great-grandchildren: Gizelle (Duane) Rees of Airdrie and their children McKenna & Davyn; Dorlisa (Tyler) Prior of Medicine Hat and their children Adelynn & Jaren; Richelle Berreth of Carstairs and her daughters Isabelle & Abigail, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and his faithful Jack Russell Terrier, Daisy.
Dan was born in the Sagathun District north of Maple Creek, SK on January 8th, 1917 to Henry and Lydia Berreth. Dan was raised in a family of 15 with 8 brothers and 6 sisters. He is survived by sisters Martha Underwood, Hilda Michaleski and Suzanna Wilson, as well as sister-in-law Nellie Elderkin. Dan was predeceased by his father Henry and mother Lydia, sisters, Rebecca, Helen and Lydia and brothers, Theodore, Albert, Henry, William, John, Reuben, Edwin and Alexander, as well as Violet’s parents and siblings.
Dan attended Northridge School and started working on ranches at age 15. He married Violet Elderkin in Medicine Hat on January 11th, 1943. While working at Reznechenko’ Garage in Piapot he started farming and ranching in the Piapot area and later farmed near Regina. Dan served in the army and was stationed in Winnipeg, MB and Terrace, B.C. Dan loved farming, ranching, operating his feed lot, raising chinchillas and trucking for the local farmers until his retirement at age 49 when he sold part of the farm.
In retirement, from 1966 until 1975, Dan owned, trained and raced thoroughbred horses across Canada and usually raced and wintered in Arizona. Dan’s favourite horse, Bold Bail, set the track record at Blue Bonnets in Montreal -an exciting event for his six horse stable.
In 1975, he moved to Medicine Hat and worked for Medican Construction doing landscaping. Dan enjoyed gardening, especially growing flowers, tomatoes, early potatoes and the fruit trees. He also enjoyed raising cockatiels. Dan was very talented mechanically and was able to repair almost anything.
He enjoyed rodeos, fishing, most sports, playing pool and cards, going to Tigers hockey games, riding the city bus to the mall and being with his family. Even in his last days, visits by his grandchildren and great- grandchildren brought smiles to his face.
Dan will be missed by his family but we will always have great memories and stories to share.

Mrs. Nancy Ruth Sissons of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Mr. Jack Sissons, passed away on Thursday, January 9th, 2014 at the age of 89 years. Nancy Ruth leaves to cherish her memory her children, Malcolm (Jennifer) Sissons of Medicine Hat, David (Valdine) Sissons of North Saanich, British Columbia, Paul (Tracie) Sissons of St. Albert, Mark Sissons of Calgary, and Margaret “Megs” (Gordon) Waterous of Pritchard, British Columbia; nine grandchildren, Lisanne (Dale) Beard, Robert (Yvonne) Sissons, Gillian Sissons (Gordon Redden), Valancy Sissons, Joshua Sissons, Patrick (Kim) Sissons, Robin Sissons, Heather Waterous and Kieran Waterous; three great grandchildren, Amelia Beard, Nya and Foster Sissons; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Nancy Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Jack Sissons; her parents, Gerald and Margaret Hope Rutherford; and one sister, Margaret Hope (Herb) Pickard. Nancy Ruth was born and grew up in Winnipeg in the midst of the Depression and war years. From age 18, after her mother’s premature death, she managed her father’s household for several years while studying for a degree in Home Economics at the University of Manitoba. She followed up with post-graduate work there and then at the University of British Columbia, where she was introduced to Jack as a blind date by his brother Tom. After their marriage in Winnipeg in 1949, Jack and Nance settled in Calgary and began a family. In 1959, with their three boys, they moved to Medicine Hat and had another son and finally a daughter! Nancy Ruth became involved in various fine arts groups, especially the Allied Arts Council, and musical theatre, the Ladies’ Aid at St. John’s, and Brownies and Guides. In the early years, she played tennis with friends and skied with her family until she could no longer keep up with her youngest. She joined the board of the Medicine Hat Rehab Society and was instrumental in building their current workshop, now Redi Enterprises. She also was on the building committee of the Cultural Centre, where she was active in the Fibre Arts Society and the Hat Art Club. For eighty years straight, she spent her summers at her beloved family camp at Clearwater Bay on Lake of the Woods where she welcomed children, grandchildren, relatives and many friends. She was never happier than when surrounded by family and friends. A lifelong Presbyterian, St. John’s was her second home. Nancy Ruth had a warm heart, a sharp wit and enthusiastically supported the causes she believed in. She always spoke her mind and left no doubt as to her opinion! Her presence and spirit will be missed by her family and her friends. The Funeral Service will be held in ST. JOHN’S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 504 – 2nd Street SE, on Monday, January 13th, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Dr. Nancy Cocks officiating. .Last week, family and friends gathered at Cook’s to celebrate the life of Sheila Ferguson. Upon entering the funeral home, everyone was greeted by a wonderful display of photo albums, pictures and memories prepared by the hands of her family. Gwen and Kevin shared in memories of a loving wife, mother & nana, while Celeste and Shelley provided special musical tributes and Celebrant Getz instilled a sense of hope for the future and a life eternal. Fellowship continued at the luncheon that followed in Cook Southland’s Reception Facility with family sharing in a private farewell at Hillside Cemetery thereafter, reflecting on their memories of this very special person who will forever be loved.

.This past Wednesday marked a special day as family and friends gathered to celebrate Katherine Gagley’s passing to her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. The Mass was celebrated in the beautiful little chapel at St. Joseph’s Home with Father Alphonse Narisetty celebrant… scripture, prayer and music filled the chapel and provided a sense of peace and ministry for those in attendance… Kay would have been proud to see her grandchildren act as pallbearers, and carry her to her place of rest in Hillside Cemetery… before the family departed the cemetery, they placed their hands upon the Urn an expression of one last touch of love.

David Manning McNeil passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2014, at the age of 65 years, beloved husband of Mary McNeil of Redcliff. Mrs. Roelfina (Fini) de Lange, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at the age of 91 years. Fini is survived by her daughter, Gerda de Lange; two grandchildren, Ralph (Samantha) and their children Olivia and Elias; Rienko (Tavin) and their children, Shae, Shae-Lee, Mila and Anneke. In accordance with Fini’s wishes, cremation has taken place without the proceedings of a formal funeral service.
