.HALLAS
It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Florence “Grace” Everill Hallas, beloved wife of the late Mike Hallas on Thursday, December 19, 2013, at the age of 75 years. Grace will be lovingly remembered by her brothers-in-law, Bill Hallas, Bill Turko both of Medicine Hat, Keith McDonald of Calgary, Bob Chant of Vancouver, B.C. and sister-in-law, Diane (Roy) Risling of Medicine Hat as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Lillian and Dave Butler; her husband, Mike Hallas; two sisters, Marlene Chant and Katherine “Susie” McDonald; brothers-in-law, Harry Simonson and John Simonson; sisters-in-law, Helen Turko, Mary Kobley, Mickey Hallas and Annie Popow. Grace was born on December 12, 1938 in Herb Lake, Manitoba. In her younger days Grace worked for many years as a secretary at Scotts Manufacturing. She married Mike Hallas in 1961, and that same year they took over the Hallas family farm at Iddesleigh, Alberta. They farmed together for 47 years until Mike’s passing in 2008. Throughout their life together, Grace worked side by side with Mike and stayed deeply involved in all aspects of running the farm, helping to make it one of the most successful farms in the area. Grace loved being on the farm so she found it very difficult to leave it behind after Mike’s passing, even though her health was deteriorating. Eventually the family convinced her to move to Medicine Hat where she spent the last few years making many new friends at the Wellington and then at the Good Samaritans where she will be remembered as one of their liveliest residents. Grace had a loving heart and will be forever missed. A special thank you from the family goes to her brother-in-law, Bill Turko, who tirelessly and selflessly managed Grace’s care during all of the years following Mike’s passing. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Sunday, from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 12 noon – 12:55 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church (238 2nd Ave N.E.) on Monday, December 23, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. After being a stay at home mom for 12 years, she ventured out and worked in the banking industry retiring after a lengthy career at the Alberta Treasury Branch downtown. Mom and dad started enjoying their camping adventures with the family the mid sixties and then spending time down south with their many friends. Together they also enjoyed their motor bike passion and went on many rides with their group including doing an annual run through the Logan Pass on the September long weekend. Mom loved clothes and had a great sense of style. She was witty and enjoyed telling many stories entertaining all her family and friends. Mom was a good listener and was there for anyone that needed to talk. She enjoyed her game shows and loved watching hockey, baseball and curling. Her memory was very sharp if we wanted to know something we knew to just ask, “mom.” Nothing could keep her down. Mom was game for anything and always liked going out. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who will be missed by us all. Mom was diagnosed with a rare brain disorder; Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy (PSP) in August of this year of which she suffered the debilitating effects for several years before being diagnosed. .MAIER
Bill Maier passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at the age of 96 years. Bill began his life on the family farm on December 14, 1917 in Hatton, Saskatchewan. He served in the Canadian Army from 1942 to 1946 after which time he moved to Medicine Hat and began his lifelong career of 35 years at the Medicine Hat Brick and Tile. On May 24, 1947, Bill married Clara Fischer. He was a dedicated and active participant on many building projects – a “can do” type of guy, always ready to give a helping hand. Bill and Clara enjoyed many years as members of Temple Baptist Church, and served in various capacities. His favourite hobbies were fishing, golfing, floor curling, jig-saw puzzles, and building things. He could fix almost anything, or as the joke went “fix it, or break it trying”. Bill and Clara spent their retirement years at South Country Village, moving from the condo, eventually to the Haven Care Centre. He was a strong resilient man and will be remembered always with much love and gratitude. Bill was laid to rest with Clara in the Hillside Cemetery after a private family time.
