The mother charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life for her baby girl, remains in custody after deciding not to have a bail hearing this week during a brief court appearance by her lawyer.
Calgary Lawyer John Oman told court Friday he decided not to have a bail hearing, and instead requested an adjournment for one week, then consented to the accused’s remand.
Oman said afterward he still plans to have a bail hearing for his client, but needs more time to “work out some logistics.”
In the meantime the 31-year-old mother and 52-year-old father of the nine-week-old baby remain in custody at the Lethbridge Correctional centre. The father is also charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life, as well as aggravated assault, sexual assault and sexual contact with a child. His matters return to court Feb. 24.
Officers were called to a northside home on Jan. 18 to check on the welfare of the infant after receiving information she was being abused. Upon arrival officers located the baby in medical distress, EMS transported her to hospital where her injuries were found to be extensive and critical.
During a court hearing last week for the parents, a small crowd gathered outside of the courthouse, where a display of stuffed animals and candles was created to show support for the baby girl. Many of them said they will show up every time the parents’ case is in court.
