Crews battle fire and cold to extinguish blaze

By Ry Clarke - Lethbridge Herald Local Journalism Initiative Reporter on November 9, 2022.

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services responded to a house fire on the 1200 block of 4 Avenue North Tuesday morning.

Crews worked in -17 weather conditions fighting fire and frost at the house located adjacent to 13 Street North near Solomon’s Porch.

“Crews arrived this morning to find a working fire in a two-story residence,” said Cody Gundlock, deputy chief with Fire/EMS. “They went ahead and did an interior attack. Due to the heavy fire conditions and smoke they came across they had to come out and do a strategic shift. Going defensive due to the extensive and increased fuel inside, it becomes a bit of a difficult fire to extinguish.”

“No damage to any exposures, and no injury to any firefighters,” said Gundlock. “One resident has been displaced, and we are having her looked after. At the time we do not know what initiated the fire right now. We do have fire investigators here who will find that out.”

With fire and ice factoring into how crews attacked the situation, fire workers stayed alert containing the incident while helping keep the area and neighbouring buildings safe.

“The cold weather is rotating crews in and out,” said Gundlock. “It is a bit time consuming but we are getting a handle on it.”
