A cyclist accused of slashing the face of a motorist following a collision last year may resolve his charges without the need for a trial.
During a brief hearing Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court, city lawyer Marcus Mueller explained he is hoping to reach an agreement with the Crown to resolve his client’s charges of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He noted, however, the Crown and defence may not agree on the length of sentence.
Peter Ajang, 46, was charged last August following a collision between a cyclist and motorist on 13 Street North. Police reported the 28-year-old driver was operating a company vehicle and turning onto 13 Street from 2 A Avenue when the collision occurred. Immediately following the collision, the cyclist approached the vehicle and slashed the driver across the face with a knife. The resulting laceration required 17 stitches to close.
The case is scheduled to return to court March 17 to allow time for the Crown and defence to work out an agreed statement of facts before conducting a sentencing hearing.
