A Lethbridge man already serving a jail term, was sentenced to another 30 days in jail after he pleaded guilty Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court to one count of possession of stolen property over $5,000.
Court was told that on Jan. 20 of this year, police received a call advising them a Ford F150 pickup truck owned by a local construction company had been stolen from an employee’s driveway. Later in the day Paul Wayne McCarthy was seen driving the vehicle.
Although McCarthy was in possession of the truck, he had obtained the vehicle from someone else, explained Crown Prosecutor Clayton Giles. Giles said, however, McCarthy was reckless and wilfully blind to the fact the vehicle was stolen.
“The kind of guy that he got it from was not the kind of guy who normally drives around in construction trucks unless they’re stolen,” Giles said, adding that McCarthy claimed he needed the truck to help him move from his residence, and he traded some drugs for it.
“So he knew gosh-darn well that there was something funky going on with the…truck, and he didn’t care.”
McCarthy will begin serving his 30-day sentence when he completes a sentence he is currently serving at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre. He also faces numerous other charges, including drug possession for the purpose of trafficking, flight from police, and causing a child to be drug-endangered, for which he has been denied bail. His lawyer told court a bail review is scheduled to held in Court of Queen’s Bench next month.
